Kuma

Kuma (Japanese for bear) was found abandoned on the road with a severely broken leg after being struck by a vehicle. The wonderful volunteers at Wylie brought him to a vet who found the leg so badly mangled it had to be amputated. After surgery, Kuma was taken into foster care by a Wylie volunteer, Pam. Pam and her family nursed Kuma back to health over the course of the next two months.
We caught our first glimpse of Kuma on the KOLO TV morning news pet segment. We immediately contacted the Wylie volunteer on duty and drove out that day to adopt him. Pam and the folks at Wylie did all they could to ensure a successful transition and Kuma was welcomed into our home that evening.
It is perhaps an understatement to say that Kuma, after suffering a horrible and debilitating accident, has now found himself in Doggie Paradise. He lives at the end of a dead end road high up and deep in the Pinion and Sagebrush hills of the Virginia Highlands. His days are filled with visits from neighborhood dogs coming to play, horses—both wild and corralled—are usually close enough that he carries on and gossips with them on a daily basis as well.
He has plenty of room to roam and explore on our property and has the run of our home with his “big sister” Kai, our other dog. He no longer whimpers and cries from nightmares while sleeping, although I do have to lift him onto our bed each night before we retire. He has adapted marvelously to one rear leg and is often seen by us and the neighbors flying through the yards at warp speed on his way to investigate a falling pinecone, or perhaps a lizard or ground squirrel hurrying about his business.
The experience we had interacting with Wylie and seeing the great things they do for our brothers and sisters in the animal world led us to become a foster care home for them. We’ve so far one successful adoption occur and are currently holding another dog for adoption. We think it is the least we can do for the joy that Kuma has brought us; hopefully we will be able to inspire and provide others with companions that bring the joy and satisfaction of caring for and loving an animal into their lives.
